Akhil S. Photographer
Recently, we sat down and interviewed Akhil S. (aka “guy with camera”). He is the team photographer, and an editor for the 3181 blog. These two roles give him a unique perspective on the sub-teams and main team as a whole. This is the second blog in the series of interviews for the members that make up team 3181.
FRC Team 3181
The main aspect that interests Akhil in robotics is the problem solving and critical thinking involved. “We’re building a robot nearly from scratch, in just a few weeks to me, that’s awesome”. When asked about the challenges in this year’s project, as a member of the media team, he mentioned branding, “Getting our name to stand out among so many other teams is a real challenge. I never realized how many intricacies have to be managed on a website”. This new branding process for 3181 is still underway. However once it is finalized, “Pittsford Robotics” will become much easier to recognize.
Akhil also goes on to mention that robotics has served to teach him a lot about teamwork. “There’s nothing more important than knowing (and accepting) your weaknesses and using teamwork to negate them. One person can’t do everything, and that’s okay.”
Who is Akhil?
Outside of robotics, Akhil continues his passion for photography. He started about a year ago and has really grown to enjoy the hobby since. Akhil made it clear to me how much he loved the hobby. “It really changes the way you look at the world”. When asked what his favorite food was, he replied “Depends, are you paying?” Akhil’s tendencies for trying new things manifests itself in food. He loves to try new things, just a few weeks ago he told me he had ‘apricot glazed salmon’. “My music taste varies a lot” Akhil told me. “I’ll go from classical, to hard rock, to indie depending on my mood…It allows me to enjoy every aspect of the music and I really enjoy that”. Akhil’s theme of wanting to see how everything works together is also seen in school, where his favorite subject is Chemistry. Since I don’t know how anyone could ever have Chemistry as their favorite class, I asked Akhil why, he answers “It’s awesome to see the building blocks of everything and how it works in practice…plus Im seeing a future in medicine and understanding Chemistry is incredibly important”.
When I asked Akhil what his favorite color was, I was surprised to hear he was colorblind. “…definitely have to say bright obnoxious pink”. Finally, Akhil gave a thoughtful response when asked who his heroes were. “Heroes is a difficult one…there are people I admire for things they’ve done in history, some people in my life do admirable things everyday”. He said that if he really had to choose, he would pick himself; as he believes you need to be your own hero before you can be one for someone else.
