Kickoff has always been a huge deal for FIRST teams. It marks the beginning of build season, and, the big reveal! This year’s event was no different. Anticipation was building as our team boarded the bus, conversation grew in volume as we got closer and closer to Spencerport, home of the Ranger Robotics team.
We fed our anticipation with donuts and coffee as we waited for the big premiere. Then, before we knew it, we were in the auditorium and the FIRST Powerup challenge was announced. At that moment every single FIRST participant’s mind began to ruminate, thinking of all possibilities and ideas that we could turn into reality.
It is reassuring to know how many people in our community think this program is important! Kick Off featured Spencerport’s Mayor, the Monroe County Executive, the Monroe County Sheriff, several Monroe County Legislators, Dr. John Valvo from Rochester Regional Health, and even a NYS Senator!
Still riding off the adrenaline from kickoff we could barely sit still on the 30 minute ride back to the school. As soon as we returned, it was right to work. We ate our lunch and went straight to determining our strategy, words cannot describe the level of energy felt during this time. We soon rushed to the nearest room and began the brainstorming process, with members of the team (both old and new) bringing ideas to the table. Mr. Profitt (our mentor) began to illustrate our ideas in order to make sure there is a mutual understanding of our plans within our team.
We really hit the ground running and we’re hoping to carry this momentum through the next few weeks. Good luck to all the other teams and we look forward to seeing what you come up with.
We will also be posting weekly recaps EVERY WEEK from here on out.
So keep coming back and stay tuned for more!!!
